Rolex Explorer II Ref 1655

Description:

Currently a sought after vintage Rolex, the Rolex Explorer II “Steve McQueen” and/or “Freccione” are used to describe this model. We’re fortunate enough to offer up this vintage Rolex Explorer II Mk5 from 1984. We bought the watch from the original owner who never took it off since he got it. With being worn daily for close to 40 years, the watch is in fair condition. It has scratches, scuffs and marks, which is to be expected on the bracelet, glass and case having been worn for so long. The African sun is incredibly harsh, having bleached the 24 hour arrow hand nearly pure white, with only a hint of color left, giving the watch a ghost effect. The bracelet and endlinks are original to the watch, bracelet code 78360 (12 links) and 558B endlinks.

There are a few negatives which need to be noted. Although the bracelet and endlinks are original, the clasp is from 1991. The bezel, which looks to be the factory one, has a circular brush finish for some reason instead of a sunburst finish. At 9 o’clock, right at the edge of the dial there is a bit of damage to the lume blocks, please view the pictures. The watch has been polished in the past.

If you can get past these few down points, this is still a fantastic vintage Rolex Explorer II for the price and one of the best priced currently on the market.

Dial:

The dial is matte black in color, and despite the damage at 9 o’clock, is super crisp.  All the hands have Tritium. The Hour and Minute hands are black and white. The Seconds hand is full white. The 24 Hour hand is black and faded orange paint. There is a date at 3 o’clock. The hour markers are applied Tritium with bigger markers at 6 and 9, and a large triangle at 12 o’clock.
